Marva Cappello, Ph.D is an Associate Professor of Teacher Education at San Diego State University, where she teaches courses in literacy methods and assessment as well as qualitative research methods at the credential, masters, and doctoral levels as well as advises doctoral students in the joint SDSU/Claremont program. She is currently the Graduate Advisor for the MAT in Reading Education, Reading Certificate, and Reading Specialist Credential Programs.

Dr. Cappello earned her Ph.D in Language, Literacy, and Learning from the University of Southern California in 2000. She earned a Masters degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Reading from City University of New York at Hunter College  and a BFA in Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Dr. Cappello’s research history includes work focusing on the process and products of young children’s writing. Her recent research addresses the use of visuals to support English language development within the context of the Common Core State Standards for Language Arts.

For 10 years, Dr. Cappello coordinated the district/university partnership at the Professional Development School in Chula Vista. Her overseas teaching experiences include courses in Innovations in Instruction and Curriculum Development for SDSU students in American Samoa.
